in borderline cases. The routine use of other biomar-ker assays, such as HFABP in conjunction with tGST activity, could provide complementary information on the potential allograft " viability ". This is illustrated by the fact that there was better segregation of donor categories (controlled vs uncontrolled) with HFABP than with tGST activity. This finding therefore warrants continued evaluation. Influence of renal function on serum and urinary heart fatty acid-binding protein levels. Total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) indicates the maximum amount of iron needed to saturate plasma or serum transferrin (TRF), which is the primary iron-transport protein (1). Theoretically, 1 mol of TRF [average molecular mass, 79 570 Da (2)] can bind 2 mol of iron (55.8 Da) at two high-affinity binding sites for ferric iron (3). Therefore , TIBC correlates well with TRF concentration, and the theoretical ratio of TIBC (in mol/L) to TRF (in g/L) is 25.1: TIBC (mol/L) ϭ 25.1 ϫ TRF (g/L) (4, 5). Measurements of TIBC, serum iron, and the percentage of iron saturation of TRF are useful for the clinical diagnosis of iron-deficiency anemia and chronic inflam-matory disorders (6, 7) and as screening tests for other clinical conditions (8). TIBC is routinely determined (9 – 12) by saturation of TRF with an excess predetermined amount of iron, removal of the unbound iron, and measurement of the iron that is dissociated from TRF. For removal of the unbound iron, magnesium carbonate (9), ion-exchange resin (10), alumina columns (11), or magnetic particles (12) are used. Most direct TIBC measurement methods require manual procedures that involve centrifugation or pretreatment of serum samples. As an alternative to direct measurement …

Investigating Changes in the Serum Iron, TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) and Transferrin Levels in Patients with Morbid Obesity Undergoing Bariatric Surgery in Kerman in 2018: A Short Report
Background and Objectives: Bariatric surgery is one of the most effective treatments for obesity. This study was designed to investigate changes in the serum iron, TIBC (Total Iron Binding Capacity) and transferrin levels in patients with morbid obesity undergoing bariatric surgery in Kerman in 2018. Materials and Methods: This prospective study was carried out on 65 participants who had gone ...
متن کاملInfluence of iron saturation as a possible source of error in the immunoturbidimetric determination of serum transferrin.
The serum transferrin concentration is usually overestimated when assessed as total iron binding capacity, because iron binds not only to transferrin but also, non-specifically, to other serum proteins [l-3]. Transferrin concentration can be measured directly by immunochemical methods including: radial immunodiffusion [ 1,2,4-61, immunonephelometric assay [6,7] and immunoturbidimetric assay [8,...
متن کاملEffects of Alpha-Lipoid Acid on Serum Iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity and Hematological Indices in β-Thalassemia Major Patients: A Cross Over Clinical Trial
Background and Objectives: Accumulation of iron is the most common consequences of repeated blood transfusions in β-thalassemia major patients. Iron chelating effects of alpha-lipoic acid have been reported by several studies. The aim of this study was to investigate effects of supplementation with alpha-lipoic acid, as a chelator, on serum iron and hematological indices in these patients. Ma...
متن کاملImmunological measurement of transferrin compared with chemical measurement of total iron-binding capacity.
Because of uncertainty as to the molecular weight of transferrin, a previous comparison [Von der Heul et al., Clin. Chim. Acta 38, 347 (1972)] between transferrin content of serum and total iron-binding capacity cannot be definitive. We found a conversion factor for expressing the maximum amount of iron bound by 1 mg of transferrin. We compared the resulting calculated value with values obtaine...
متن کاملProhepcidin in maternal circulation: is it related to spontaneous preterm labor?
BACKGROUND/AIM To investigate whether spontaneous preterm labor (PTL) with intact membranes is associated with changes in maternal serum prohepcidin concentrations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study consisted of patients with spontaneous PTL with intact membranes (n = 25), a control group of healthy pregnant women between the 24th and 37th gestational weeks (n = 22), and uncomplicated term preg...
متن کاملDiscriminating between iron deficiency anemia and anemia of chronic disease using traditional indices of iron status vs transferrin receptor concentration.
We compared the ability of soluble serum transferrin receptor (TfR) concentration, quantified using the R&D Systems (Minneapolis, MN) enzyme-linked immunosorbent TfR assay, with other, more traditional indicators of iron status (total iron binding capacity [TIBC], mean corpuscular volume [MCV], percent transferrin saturation [%TS], RBC distribution width [RDW], and serum iron concentration [SIC...
